BRIEF BIOGRAPHY ...
I am an Associate Professor, Head of Programme and Head of Department of the PGCE at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. My field of interest is Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and Primary School Mathematics Education. He joined the NMMU in 2007. Prior to my academic career, I was Head of Department of Mount Pleasant Primary School in Port Elizabeth. I always try to be innovative and adopt new technologies and approaches for teaching and learning. In 2011 I received the Teacher of the Year Award within the Faculty of Education, as well as the NMMU Teacher of the Year Award. In 2013 I was awarded the HELM LEAD (Higher Education Leadership Management) HESA (Higher Education South Africa) Scholarship, a scholarship awarded to thirty young academic leaders in South Africa.
My research interests are Conflict Management, ICT implementation and integration in education, social media for teaching and learning, learning as design, intermediate phase school mathematics teacher professional development and learners’ misconceptions in the intermediate phase.
I assists primarily disadvantaged schools and has developed a heuristic for ICT implementation, as well as the C2RHOAR3FS2R2 framework for professional teacher development. Our ICT project in disadvantaged schools has received funding from the Hermann Ohlthaver Trust and his engagement with participating schools has resulted in research papers being published in several national and international accredited academic journals on ICT related aspects. In 2012 I was awarded the NMMU Emerging Engagement Award for the best emerging engagement project, as well as the NMMU Emerging Researcher of the Year within the Faculty of Education. My first MEd student graduated in 2013, cum laude and my second student graduated cum laude too in 2014. I am fortunate to deliver ICT related papers and presentations at academic conferences and am invited to present at schools, local conferences and international conferences regularly on ICT in education related aspects. Currently I am busy to investigate and to convert dvds based on the Khan Academy Mathematics and Science portal that can be played on any dvd player in order to assist learners who do not have access to the internet to view this content offline. Another project is using cartoon story maker software to assist learners with literacy development as well as the learner-designed Cyberhunts. I also create classroom snippets on my iPad for my students and use the iPad as an interactive white board for teaching. Educreations is my snippet creator and I upload my classroom video snippets to iLEARN, the NMMU portal for my students.
I also serve on the executive of the International Organisation of Science and Technology Education (IOSTE) and is co-editor in chief of the newly established online journal, Educational Research for Social Change (ERSC). In addition, I serve on various academic editorials e.g. the International Journal of Baltic Science and also design and maintain websites for IOSTE and ERSC respectively. Furthermore, I serve on various Faculty and University Committees and is also serving the community as the School Governing Body (SGB) Chairperson of Summerwood Primary School in Summerstrand, Port Elizabeth.
I have been fortunate to be invited as a plenary speaker on several occasions within the last 3 years. Bearing in mind that I have been a head of department at school before as well as being an academic at tertiary level for only 7 years now, this is indeed a great achievement and highligt in my academic career.
I have also received an invitation from Prof Dr Martin Bilek to be a keynote plenary speaker at an international IOSTE ICT Conference to be held in the Czech Republic in September 2014. My keynote topic is: A heuristic for the design and practical implementation of ICT based animated learner designed cartoons for the promotion of scientific literacy thinking.
In addition, I have been invited to also be a keynote at the University of Siauliai in October 2014. My keynote topic is: Developing English second language writing and speaking by means of Cartoon Story Maker ICT Software.
