Self-reflection on the future teaching and learning advancements that I would like to “champion”

I would also like to focus on TWO aspects:

  • Designing a full online mentoring SBL programme for teachers at school in order for them to obtain a certificate related to mentoring. I am currently analysing data pertaining to our students' mentoring experiences at schools in their final year and the results will enable me to design this mentoring programme
  • I would like to be skilled in using software such as Articulate360 and/or Lectora Inspired to create different online learning experiences. I would like to create modules in such a manner that students can follow different paths and learn at their own pace to complete a module fully online with minimum or zero face-to-face contact time

Other interests

I would like to continue with my ICT Herman Ohlthaver schools work, to which I have referred to previously, with the practical implementation of the Student-Designed-Extended-Cyberhunt(s). I would also like to embark on a Wiki project with them.

I would also like to determine whether or how student-designed-cyberhunts could impact or make a difference in my own students’ learning and their experience of this type of learning strategy, as well as on how teachers and learners in our schools experience this strategy. I intend to do this with our students in collaboration with Mrs Carmel Mohammed, as her students focus in her one module on media. I have introduced students in 2010 to the strategy, but would like to make it a research project. A research proposal has been handed to the Education Ethics Committee, related to the above.

In addition, I would like to pilot the use of an alternative to expensive electronic whiteboards, namely the Wii Interactive device, which convert a data projected screen to an interactive work environment. I have received the equipment and will try this out in the second semester.

I would also like to record some of my class sessions and make these recordings available to my students on the LEARN Portal, in order that they can revise or clarify aspects that they might have missed during the class.

Another aspect is the use of ICT Software such as Cartoon Story Maker to assist with the cognitive development in Mathematics, Science and Languages. I am busy with research in this domain as I am of the opinion that when learners and/or students design cartoons based on science, maths and language aspects which their peers could use, not only the users will benefit, but the designers will to. In the plenary keynote section, I have indicated that me ideas regarding this is paying dividends, as I have been invited to share my thinking behind this internationally.

Since March 2014, we have championed a virtual online Science classroom with a school in Paterson. Dr Jeff Illsley (retired) conduct lessons online to learners at Paterson from his home in Port Elizabeth. We hope to roll this out to more schools and embark on research related to this.

Another aspect is the Khan Academy and its videos for Mathematics. This is another possible Maths innovation that we would like to implement in schools where mathematics seems to be problematic. Currently from April 2019, we are using Raspberry PI in six schools to provide learners access to Mathematics videos, exam papers, memos and other materials as resources.
